Super duper late weeknote. Sorry for the delay, I was travelling back home and had underestimated how much time it takes to complete one weeknote entry!
Life
Back to hanging out with Kunwar
Ever since Gunwant has left, I wasn’t able to hangout with Kunwar as much. After the Wayanad trip, I left for my hometown and upon return I kept getting pulled into random plans every Sunday. And hence, I feel very happy that I could watch Resident Evil with him last week and then we could go to Manjeet da Dhaba this Sunday. This restaurent was recommended to us by Tanvi and Ankur. Thanks a lot peeps for the banger recommendation!
While we were discussing about the place initially during the co-working session, it was brought up that this Dhaba is located in a super shady place. I mean yeah, it is under a bridge, which is a dead end and bridge is a foot bridge carrying passengers away from a railway station. Sounds like perfect recipe for disaster, but it felt chill mostly. I could see a bunch of young women using the bridge late in the night and surrounding seemed bustling too. It might have been shady before, but it definitely felt a lot safer now. Though as always, better safe than sorry.
Next up, I would like to try Kenneth’s recommendation of another Punjabi restaurent he had sent over the DM :).
Movie night
Immediately after the dinner I cycled to Ayush’s place for a movie night with climbing friends. This was a very last minute plan and hence, at a point, both me and Ayush were convinced it’s just gonna be the two of us. Thankfully, everyone showed up slowly but surely. We watched Airplane. Mann, what a masterpiece, more about it in the movies section below!
Restaurent week
This Tuesday, in celebration of the Restaurent week, I went out with Aeish, Atharva, Kiran, Tanvi, Ankur for a lunch at Baan Pad Thai. This restaurent is on the path from metro station and climbing gym to my house, and hence I see it every single day. I have been meaning to go to this place for a while and hence when Tanvi asked about it on the co-working signal group, it was an instant yes from me!
Well, not thinking and answering yes instantly did cost me a bit, I only later realized that each seat for this set menu cost 2k rupees!! Zomato sneaked in a 600 rupees “convenience” fee too, what a rip off! We had one starter, one main course and one dessert. I think it would have been much cheaper to go individually, but I don’t regret it. Though, there’s a good chance I am not participating in restaurent week again for trying out a new place 🙈.
Food is reviewed in the section below.
After the nice lunch, we headed to Ondu for a freshening filter coffee. We had some really interesting talks here, I think what peaked my interest most was Tanvi talking about post-partition struggles to unite India as it is today. A lot of freedom fighters did in fact go villain mode to the opposing regions, and made them unite with the India!
Somehow, we got super lucky and had visited Ondu on their birthday, happy birthday! 🥳 They treated us with a 1 + 1 offer on coffee and then also gave us an on-the-house chocolate cake! So much sugar rush 😭.
Swimming and cycle
On Thursday morning, me and two other climbing friends decided to go swimming 🏊. I haven’t swam in a while and that’s why I was really looking forward to it.
I woke up early, cycled to the place and started calling them. Guess what, none of them picked up 😡. So here I was standing outside the swimming pool feeling betrayed and dejected. But then I realized I didn’t care as such cause swimming itself is the mood uplifter for me! So that’s what I did and honestly, I just felt at ease in the water. Only thing I like about the Halasuru swimming pool is they allow one to swim for the full hour, no whistles ringing at 40 minutes mark to come out and take shower.
Everything was amazing, and…another bad luck struck. When cycling back, my fender and brake support broke off the core cycle frame and flew off in the middle of the road 🙃. If it wasn’t for my reflexes I would have done a full 180 with the cycle 😂. I somehow untangled the brake system and drove to the nearest cycle repair shop for a quick repair. I lost my fender to heavy cars, and I currently don’t have any plans of re-installing one. Let’s see if I do end up needing one in the future. Due to all this fiasco, I started my day at 12! Absolute disaster of a day.
Happy birthday Harsh
On Thursday evening, after climbing and scolding session, all of us celebrated Harsh’s birthday in Si Nonna’s. Happy birthday again Harsh 🥳!
Following the SUPER awesome dinner, we found ourselves at Rohan’s house yapping about the most random topics, ranging from story behind Tulsi being a plant to japanese tentancle hentai 😭. We also ripped off a number plate from an abandoned Mercedes in Rohan’s apartment. I wish I had similar level of presence of mind cause I would have loved to get one for decoration in my room.
Most of the people left, but four of us found ourselves having late night chai and shouting Contact at each other 😂. After almost getting chased out by the shopkeeper for shouting too loud, we decided to head home at 3 in the night.
Drink till death
On Friday evening, I agreed to a plan of drinking party at Chin Lung’s with an ex-colleague of mine. I hadn’t seen him in a while, and a bunch of current colleagues were going to drink with him, so I just decided to tag along. Most of the times I do not participate in these parties cause I don’t like people who over drink and cause trouble. I hate having to clean up their mess!
Although everyone had agreed to only drink 2 shots, all of them ended at 10 shots each!! I have never seen 13k spent just on shots in Chin Lungs 😭. All of them were scolded by me into having warm water and salt + lemon at regular intervals. This prevented anyone from going mad and causing a ruckus and allowed us to have a pretty good time. At one point, we were dancing with all the people around our table, it was super fun!
I also learned about a secret to check salaries of newly joined people in our company. Overall, it was 👍 Great Success 👍.
Sleep cycle is MESSED UP
My messed sleep cycle has not recovered yet. Initially, it was Navratri keeping me up, but now it’s hanging out with friends. Ever since shifting to Indiranagar, I am hanging out with all the different groups a lot more. But this week was top of the charts!
Hangouts plus an extremely bad habit I have developed of reading manga before bed. Contrary to what I am writing, most of the times this helps me go to sleep, but that also is dependent on the part of manga story I am currently reading. If it’s the usual, then yeah definitely helpful! But there are sections in the story which get you riled up so hard! I am currently reading through one right now and it is a nightmare to sleep with SO MUCH ENERGY 😭.
Bengaluru Systems Meetup
On Saturday, I attended November edition of Bengaluru Systems Meetup. Theme this time was Inference. We had four interesting talks and I was accompanied by Samyak and Ayush for some interesting live discussion on the same xD.
First talk was around: How does inference actually work?. This could have been a banger talk. Sadly, presenter just rushed through it. Some topics in there easily deserved an individual talk of their own. It would be interesting to see a continually running deep dive into various parts of inference over few months.
Second talk was titled: One process, a hundred agents, or a harness written in Zig. This was given by a guy who doesn’t work in tech, he’s a finance bro! He got tired of how heavy the harnesses are in practice. All they need to do is loop over popen + curl.
Are there gaps in his harness? FOR SURE. Does it matter? Nope. My buddy is out here FAFO-ing, how can I not be impressed?
To be honest, I did shit about it with a mutual. And then the mutual asked me what was I expecting? Some peak perf ILP/MLP, no-cache-thwarting software?? I am the person who usually looks at things with optimism, I thank my mutual for reminding me that :).
Next up was The Interface Tax: How Much of Near-Memory Compute's Speedup Survives in LLM Decode?. Talk was around new architectures where memory and compute were right next to each other, and how layout-aware memory controllers could help mitigate a lot of issues we face today in CPU <> GPU world. One of the Q&A questions I liked a lot was: “How is this different than a GPU?”. And honestly, at that moment I looked back at the whole talk and did not find a difference 🫠.
But I also walked away with validation of an idea I have brewing since a long time. Any HPA (high performance applications) needs:
- Workload driven scheduling with full IO control
- Workload driven hardware and memory control
- Hard Disks
- SSDs
- Memory
- S3, everything
Final talk was around One Kernel to Run Them All: Compiling LLMs into a Single Megakernel with Megabake. And honestly, I did not listen to this one, it was too dense for me 🙈.
Climbing
This was an awesome week in climbing! But sadly, I have no videos this time. Maybe it’s a proof of how much I was engrossed in enjoying the climbs?
Sunday
I sent the level 6 green I was trying last week. As I had mentioned in the last weeknote, it was just me being exhausted. I should have tried that climb earlier in the session. This time, I tried it just after the warm up and it was my day’s first attempt-first send!!
Next, we were trying out level 5 yellow on the slab wall. This was pain and tears. Whole route was so sketchy: standing on super small holds at weird angles, balancing yourself on a literal sloper hemisphere 😭. I finally gave up on the beta tall people had suggested me, and asked the comp kids about how they approach it. Btw, these are literal kids, some are not even 10 years old 😂. I am kinda proud of myself that I approach them with the curiosity to learn! Stay humble, keep learning. It also reminds me of this line from ascelpius’s “Why I fight” blog: Leave your footwear and ego outside the door.
Tuesday
After loads and loads of sketchy falls, I finally sent the level 5 yellow!! I really wish I could have taken a video. But I also DO NOT want to repeat it. Every time I get on slab so sketchy, my heart rate shoots off the roof. Well, why do I still do it? I kinda like being scared and then overcoming that feeling by proving myself wrong :P.
Rest of the session was just time pass. Whatever I could do, I had done. In remaining climbs, I was aware of some fundamental work I had to do to unlock them. I was pretty sad near the end of the session. Not because I had finished only one climb, but because I wasn’t tired 😮💨. I am so used to being dead by the end of the session that the day I am not, I feel super dissatisfied.
Thursday
This week, wall on the second floor got reset! There was also a competition called “Flash or Slash” happening. Basically flash routes in the order they have been marked, starting from level 1 till level 7.
I decided to not care about it cause I start climbing under pressure in competitions. I am happy enjoying climbing as it is. And this caused me to flash everything till level 5s, except this one level 3 slab style route which irritated me a bit too much. I was able to send it near the end of the session, but I absolutely hate routes like that.
As in for the level 5s, I was able to flash the red one with a lock off, heal hook beta. I also sent another purple slab in 2-3 attempts. Only one remaining was black lache jump which I was so close to sending and just slipped in the end move. Next time it is!
Surprisingly, I also almost got both level 6s too! With one move remaining in each one, I am hopeful about sending this set completely!
Food
Chinita
We had taken a small break between the climbing session on Sunday to grab some food. We headed to Chinita and ordered:
- Tortillas
- Nachos
Tortillas were straight up bad and Nachos were average-ish. I should stick to my default order here 😭.
Manjeet da daha
Thanks again to Tanvi and Ankur for suggesting this place! It was a banger recommendation.
We ordered:
- Paneer sabzi
- Chana sabzi
- Paneer and aloo parathe
- Lassi
- Dal Makhni
- Loads of chapatis
- Kheer
I think all of us unanimously agreed Paneer sabzi was THE BEST! Not sure what was the preparation style, but it absolutely slapped. Chana sabzi was okay-ish, one of my Punjabi friends was talking about how it seemed to have the same preparation as all the Dhabas near his hometown. Parathe were easily much much better than Khao and Khaane do. Dal Makhni was okay-ish. And finally `kheer was average too.
So much average for a place I am calling banger. Well paneer, lassi and the price made up for everything. It was just 240 per person and we were brim full! Fully worth it.
Baan Pad thai
All of us ordered a bunch of stuff and I don’t remember it all, so I am going to list out things I personally liked. Corn Fritters were absolute banger! Whatever sauce they had applied on it, elevated it to my top corn fritter place. Sadly a consistent theme you would find through all the dishes, quantity was pretty less :(.
I really liked Veg Pad thai noodles too! I wish I had ordered that instead of the Tom Yom rice in the photo above.
And lastly, Roasted Coconut Ice Cream was BANGER! I liked it wayyy too much. 100% coming back just for the dessert.
Ondu
I finally got around to trying oatmilk coffee at Ondu. I have mixed feelings about it right now. Might need to visit a couple of more times to form an opinion.
Chin Lungs
All the food here was just straight up bad. No complaints though, it is a good enough drinking place xD.
Movies
I have consumed a ton of Airplane content on social media before. This led me to believe I knew about all the gags. Couldn’t have been more wrong. WTF is this movie, there is so much random shit happening throughout 😭. I couldn’t stop laughing a second. Absolute banger watch. Looking forward to watching the second part some day 👀.
