We are heading towards Black Mirror reality one day at a time. This week, I visited Majestic metro station for the first time since moving to Indiranagar. And I was greeted with this:
FUCK YOU BMRCL. There are ads already on metro trains, on stations, with big LEDs and tall posters and now you won’t let passengers stand in peace right at the docking spot. Bengaluru metro is the most expensive metro backed by bonkers ridership numbers, and they still want MORE money!
Life
Navratri
Navratri is finally here! As someone born and brought up in Gujarat, I naturally LOVE navratri. And yes, I can go beyblade while playing Dodhiya 🕺. I was trying to explain my colleagues why I love playing Garba so much. It mostly boils down to the trance state you enter when you are already super exhausted from the repeated high energy steps. To me that is super addicting!
On the first day, I went to play garba in Whitefield. I attended the same event last year, but at that time it was organized in a much smaller space. The hall this time was easily 4-5X bigger! There were so many people and I had SO MUCH FUN! This was my photo and video from that day:
On the second day, I went to super famous Palace Grounds. I was with a group of extended Gujju climbing gang. And since they were quick to pick up steps, I had a blast with them! The only sad part was whole event felt way too commercial, and that killed the whole vibe for me. I need traditional songs (zero bollywood DJ nonsense) and people who know the steps.
These organizers instead were selling dandiyas, had zero water arrangements and were having dance performances from third party groups till 10 o clock. They were also running a money scam in the form of forcing cash only payments for food and water. If you don’t have any, they would give you cash by charging 5 rupees per 10 rupees of UPI payment!! This absolutely blew me away, I hate organizers of this group, same as the BMRCL money mongers. FUCK YOU!
After this horrible experience I wanted something non-commercial and hence decided to go to: https://www.instagram.com/sriblrnavratriutsavmandal/. This group has been organizing non-commercial traditional garba for 45 years! And oh boy, this did not disappoint. We did two artis as per the tradition, followed by live music by an old couple who seemed to enjoy singing more than participating in the actual dance. It almost felt like Lata Mangeshkar and R.D. Burman were alive again.
Event felt more like organized by families, for families, so you had breaks where children are getting free gifts, there’s lucky draw, etc. But overall, this was the best place amongst all. I felt nostalgic for my hometown 🤧❤️. Would definitely support them by donating.
If you are reading this weeknote and interested in joining me, lemme know!
Interview
After the first interview rejection, I reached out to a company which has been keen on hiring me for a while. I prepared and had the interview last week. I think the interview went really really nice! And guess what, I got rejected AGAIN.
Life’s in a pretty weird phase right now. Getting rejected from DSA interviews where I solved the whole question with all the edge cases, and then being put into PiP with unreasonable expectations cause someone stopped liking me is PEAK!
I am optimistic though. Let’s see where life takes me :).
Blogs
This week was productive for blogging. I published a poem named Dazai followed by a photoblog on Ganeshotsav.
I wrote the poem after getting rejected from an interview I was so sure I would clear. I got rejected for silliest of the reasons and was pretty bummed by that. As for Dazai, if you have watched Bungou Stray Dogs or are a fan of Japanese literature, you would know 🫣. I even got some encouragement from Jatan for the poem which I am super grateful for 🙇.
Hopefully, I can continue the streak and publish a couple more drafts in the upcoming weeks.
Stretching
With Navratri fever ON, I have ended up staying up super late every single night. This has caused me to miss stretching every day :(. This weeknote is an embarrassment marker for me to get back next week!
Climbing
I missed climbing this Sunday again 😭. I have decided to stay put at home this weekend, so that I can chill and actually spend doing my regular weekend routine. So yeah, in next weeknote, you would see climbing update of upcoming Sunday too!
Tuesday
They made some changes to the black level 6 I had linked last week, so I sent it again and much much smoother this time. Soft or not, smoothness is always good to have!
I also spent a lot of time trying this red level 5 and finally managed to send it! Starting moves are just your average slab with the best advice being, trust your foot. But the last move…I am standing on a credit-card-thin hold and I have to put my entire body weight on it! I kept falling on that move for half of the session but I didn’t give up and suddenly:
After sending this, I moved on to the only remaining level 6 in this set, which is this cool swing-coordinate-run-slippery-volume-jump-catch-hold move! It is super cool, here is a video of me attempting it:
Thursday
I am SO HAPPY that overhang and cave got RESET, lessggooo!! This set was F-ing hard tho, I couldn’t flash anything, not even level 3s 💀. Well, it was a slip up, but that definitely took away my flash on the pink 3. Level 4s too were really hard this time, it took me quite a few attempts to understand the best way to send these. Though I am not sad overall, cause…I sent a really hard level 5.
Again, this was a shouldery, grip strength plus lockoff testing route, which is kinda my style. Because it suited me, I was able to send the route in a couple of tries! But…but…those attempts, mannn, they took everything out of me. It was a super tiring route! I got so tired, that I have still not recovered, even two days later! 😭
After this, I wasn’t able to project the remaining two level 5s. Hopefully I can make good progress on them on Sunday :).
Food
This week was breakfast testing week! Yash, Harsh, and I tried Amma and Appa Idli and Babai Tiffins.
Amma and Appa Idli
Idlis and vada were decent, unremarkable though. Dosas were cooked with super soft base and were kinda different, definitely in a good way. We really liked Chilli Chutney and Egg dosa. One thing which surprised me was for the price, portions were small. I would have expected a lot more from a roadside stall, but I guess it got struck by the Indiranagar shrinkflation effect.
Babai Tiffins
This is one place where I had been before and was a huge fan of! After this visit, I would just say, it’s a good place, no longer bearing the charm it once did. Idlis, Vadas and Dosas were as good as they get, but I miss two things majorly:
- dense peanut chutney
- purple grape juice
Chinita
I had also ordered Paneer Pambaza Sandwich from Chinita for dinner on Thursday. And mann, I have never had anything SO BAD from Chinita. This one had SUPER DRY bread, to the extent it was impossible to keep thrusting it down the throat without a drink on the side (thanks to Diet Coke for the help). I am not ordering this ever again, back to my default order of Spinach and Caramelized Onions Rice Bowl.
Cheesecakes
I went out with a colleague to a cheesecake place he has been praising for a while. It’s called Maison du Brownie & Cheese Cake. A super narrow shop, situated just a lane away from 12th Main Road. We had two unnamed cheesecakes, but we just pointed to and ordered. They were really good! Sweet fairy in me is happy! 🧚
Tech
Another reason for staying put at home this week, was attending IndieWebClub meetup! As always it was super fun to be there. Just one regret: I forgot to interact with people, I had loads of questions for Abhinav, Ankur, Tanvi, Abhigyan and Aeisha 😭. Instead, I was consumed by the fixes I was doing on my website. Blogs section now is an uncategorised list of blogs with titles and dates instead of just slugs. This went through a couple of iterations including adding two parallel sections, which I decided didn’t look good enough to continue. I guess I will ask them the questions in a session after Nov 20?
And finally in today’s bad software rant:
Slack’s search bar is a bit too slow I believe. I can type much faster. And by the time it loads the partial result from few milliseconds ago, I have already typed out the full thing. I also have a habit of pressing enter immediately after typing out my exact search query, and as the search bar is still stuck showing the old entries, I am always led into the wrong chat :(
