A building in Surat which looks like Udaipur

This is not Udaipur, it’s a random building in some random narrow street in Surat.

Michami Dukkdam

Michhami Dukkdam to everyone 🙏

In short: If I have wronged you in any way, please forgive me as do I

In long: This is something all the Jains say to each other after completing the Samvatsari Pratikaman, which is considered most important ritual of the year. After 8 days of intense spiritual activities, it is also expected to some extent that a devotee ruminates about all the wrong doings they might have done to a particular person. You usually start with the list of people closest to you, most of the times that’s family. Then you move on to friends, colleagues, etc. etc. At the end of the stick are the people you meet occasionally, who you might have wronged unintentionally. I really like this philosophy of Jainism, if followed properly, it forces one to introspect deeply about yourself and your relationship with others.

This might sound similar to the yearly review you do to get your salary hike and in a way it is! Just like it, you don’t start thinking about your achievements once in an year. You do that and there is a higher chance to miss out something important. Same is the case with this, its encouraged to make it a part of your daily life. It’s a form of daily journalling I believe? Whatever it is, I really like the idea of it. Hopefully someday I can incorporate it at a deeper level :).

Chauviyar Upvas

After my Tela (3 days of fasting), I did another fast on Samvatsari. But this time, I notched it up a little by not drinking ANY water for the whole day. I had been doing this ever since I was a kid, but had stopped in recent years cause I used to do Tela at the end of the Paryushan, and third day of fast without water with SO MANY activities is like hell! But as I had completed the Tela early this time, I got a nice chance to sneak in one more fast :).

Paushad

On Samvatsari every year, I take Paushad. This means living the life of a Jain saint for a day. It’s like Nayak but with saints in it xD. And yes, there are people who like the life so much that they decide to walk the path of saints for the rest of their life. Now last day of Paryushan i.e. Samvatsari, has a LOT OF activities itself. Add to them all the strict rituals you follow for living a cheap imitation of saint life, it’s a HELL. I leave my house around 04:00 in the morning and return back home after 22:00, at which point I am so exhausted I can’t do anything except falling on my cozy bed and sleep like a baby. This is made worse by the fact that I usually have my third fast day or Chauviyar Upvas that day. You get zero downtime between these hours, and also don’t have any luxuries of mobiles, etc to use. A daily of pure spirituality. It’s a bliss. A lot of people, also take Maun (not speaking anything for the whole day). Everyone has their own ways of getting more “spiritual”. I have been doing it for the last 15 years and hope to continue doing the same for the rest of my life :).

Night out

After Paryushan was over, I was back to being a menace to the society I normally am 😂. Just the very next day, me and Sanyam went out to check progress on the house he is building and also grab some tasty Rajasthan dinner at a new place we wanted to try. My FAFO originated with both of us roaming around trying all the different food places in Surat xD.

Immediately after this, I went out for another loafing session with an old childhood friend, Heth. She and I are family friends and have been hanging out with each other ever since we were born (literally!). We went around doing Pandal hopping as it was Ganesh Chaturti. I clicked a LOT OF PHOTOS! Expect a photoblog of the same soon :). After that we had a really really good coco at Maa coco. Coco is like chocolate milk but 1000x better, sorry I know I am kinda butchering a drink I love so much, but trust me, if you ever end up in Surat, you gotta try this!

After the much needed drinks break, we went on the Cable Bridge and sat on the edge of it enjoying the breeze, wails of various birds and talking about life. We both didn’t realize it was 03:00 in the morning and had to literally hurried home and walk like an assassin 😂.

Bullying Sohom

All the readers of Blr IndieWebClub, we need to bully Sohom into moving his setup out of a weird combination of Github Pages and Cloudflare. Buddy is so lazy he has become okay with a WEEK’s DOWNTIME! One of the sentences in the chat above literally means, he would spend his whole life like this if no one bothers him. Let’s all call him out on our whatsapp group for the same 😤.

BLR

I am back in BLR!

Tech

Food

Chai and Bun Maska

Even though more than half of the week was spent in Paryushan and train, I still managed to have enough outside food in just 2 days 😭
