Life
New house
I am finally done with all the shifting business! It surprisingly didn’t take a lot of effort, so that was good :).
I was assuming it would be a very big change in life, I would feel so different, NOTHING…It feels like I have been living here forever 🫠. I think I should give the credit to my new flatmate for this. He made everything so smooth that I never felt out of place.
For the surroundings, there’s a small playground just opposite to my house. Of course its full of kids and teenagers playing cricket and football all day, but it also has a small side benefit of keeping my veranda windy enough and not blocked by other buildings on the sides! Enjoy a simple photo of sky from my veranda. Thanks to Yash for the click!
Circlestore
I ordered a used bicycle from CircleStore. You would assume I would learnt my lesson after last week’s fridge fiasco, well let’s just say FAFO won again 😛. It got delivered by Thursday and I am looking forward to using it to go to Swim in the mornings!
Fridge
We ended up getting a brand new fridge, it is completely paid for by my flatmate cause he is planning on getting married and hence also carrying it along with him when he leaves.
YAP
Me, Harsh and Yash had a LONG yapping session, we first met at Chaska Bun to enjoy some nice Tea and Bun Maska, followed by yapping at the cafe, at the house, on the terrace, in a darshini. We talked too much lol, none of use realized when 6 hours passed by, but it was good, I like catching up with them :).
Goodbyes
This week I said goodbyes to two good friends of mine:
- Greg had come to India for an internship and had been climbing here with the same cadence as me. I didn’t interact a lot with him in the initial days, but later we became really good friends. It’s sad that he had to leave India so early. I hope he can look back and cherish the memories he made in India forever!
- Gunwant is moving out of India for a new job! It has always been fun hanging around with him, all the Sundays we went around trying out food, trekking around Bengaluru and in general doing rando shit all the time! I will really miss everything. All the very best Gunwant! I really hope you thrive in this new role and be super successful in your life. You are a truly exceptional guy
:).
Wayanad
I left for a spontaneous Wayanad trip on Friday evening! Its been so long I just had a CHILL trip, no running/hurrying around whole day, just rest and chill. I feel refreshed but didn’t get time to do some much needed introspection on my current relationship with $WORK.
Also, now you know why this weeknote is SO late :P.
Climbing
Old set
On Sunday, I kept trying two level 5s on overhang, red and purple. I literally just kept repeating the same move OVER AND OVER for 4-5 hours. You would think I would have made some progress on them, like even a tiny little minute improvement? NONE! But I don’t get discouraged by these things. If I am determined to send it, I WOULD FOR SURE!
Well the fight wasn’t long lasting for red one, I sent it on Tuesday itself. And I almost got purple too! Well this “almost” has not evolved to a full send till now :(. I tried the same thing on Thursday, FOR THE WHOLE SESSION. I kept falling off the final move, over and over and over. Shit’s hard. But I am ready to try it again next week 💪.
While I have not been able to send these routes, I am distracting my brain doing campus. We have been making some really high quality campus routes and projecting them at the end of the session. Enjoy some videos of the same:
Swimming
I sneaked in an early morning swim in Jayanagar’s swimming pool and managed to do 900m continuously this time! Later, I felt a bit tired to lift heavy boxes for shifting, but all the endurance training done in climbing helped in the pinch :P
Food
I tried Smash Guys this Sunday. I would recommend Louisiana burger over kimichi paneer any day and if you are there DO NOT MISS Old monk chocolate moose, banger dessert!
Later in the week, at Chaska Bun I tried Bun Maska and Chai. And my official goated Bun Maska eatery has been replaced! Bun was super soft and Maska was actual Maska, not scam butter! 100% worth a try!
Work
After last week’s turmoil, I was already pretty confused. Just to make it worse, I have learnt that my company has layoffs incoming!!?? I have been super anxious ever since I heard the news. I think I finally understand the meaning of: “Ignorance is bliss”.
Just before this bomb, I had a candid 1:1 with my manager in which I discussed everything as I feel about them, no sugar coating, no beating around the bush. I feel he answered me in a very diplomatic way and I am not sure anymore how to interpret the whole talk with him. It’s just confusion all the way down 😭.
Tech
I finally got around to setting up Tracy to get some beautiful profiles, except….Tracy doesn’t measure cache counters on MacOS, b r u h moment. I got back to setting up and getting profiles using Instruments itself. I got some really nice insights and integrated few short-circuit conditions in the loop. But now, the biggest bottleneck is allocation happening in the loop. I am very two-minded about what to do there, cause there’s no better way to do it expect this :(.
Harsh also linked me to: https://www.mrfdev.com/enhancer-for-youtube, time to remove those pesky shorts, comment section, etc!
TV Show
I have reached on 10th episode of Flower of evil, and THIS SHOW IS GOING BONKERS! The twist after twist, my mind is swirling and is addicted to every second of it!
Reads
- Those text in the background getting dispersed and disappearing on click is such a lovely effect 🤌: https://stolen-thoughts.com/
- Really really good read: https://shreyasdoshi.substack.com/p/the-antithesis-principle
- I hope I can become the “wise” mentioned in it someday.
- Also another point which struck cord with me is the “analogy” part. Everyone I know is asking LLMs to explain them concepts in easier fashion. Problem being most of the time, LLMs come up with analogies. People love them, but as the author mentions: “Elegant for explaining the output of your thinking, treacherous as input to your thinking”. DO NOT RELY ON ANY ANALOGIES WHEN LEARNING.
- Found some really interesting posts here: https://registerspill.thorstenball.com/p/joy-and-curiosity-95
- Register for his newsletter for awesome reads, but never get persuaded by his opinions, he is one of the prime examples of being AI pilled, just in this very link above:
- He mentions: “And then, what else do you need your local dev env for? Editing code by hand? Come on, man. Reviewing code deeply? Amp has a diff viewer, so you don’t need to do that locally either. And for all of the things I shipped here, I didn’t review each line anyway. I do spot checks and make sure the architecture is right”
- He clearly does not give code a lot of credibility, its the high level ideas that are important to him. Also I have read a lot of his previous newsletters to know that this is what he truly believes.
- But just after that in a bullet point: “Finally an end to this stupid argument: ‘Code was never the hard part’ is an insult to all programmers.”
- So my friend, do you believe in the CODE OR NOT!? What an obvious contradiction! I usually am not vocal about these things. But mannn, I used to love this guy overall a lot. Sadly, AI has pilled even the smartest of people. Though again, he still consumes and shares A LOT OF GOOD CONTENT. So if you keep his AI delusion in mind while reading the newsletter, you can ignore sections not necessary and still find a lot of good content

- I got a rough idea of how Anubis works! I wonder if it can leverage CPU specific SIMD extensions to do computations even faster. They might be interested in this work cause they care about users. From above blog post:
Let's face it, users don't like it when they get an Anubis challenge page. I've tried to make them show up less often. But this body of work would require checking up on CPU capabilities, handrolling/FFI with highway, all of them are a bit of a hassle, we would need browser APIs to do the same and I not really sure if they even allow all this. Interesting food for thought regardless! Maybe this can form a good weekend project? 🤔 (and maybe a good blog post too:P).
