I was talking to a college friend of mine and we started discussing climbing again, he actually started climbing because of me and has been continuous even after a year, super proud of you! As he climbs in Delhi, we often exchange videos of our sends, this time I sent a level 6 climb video to him. And he sent me these manga panels the next day, they are so beautiful!
This also made me wonder: if climbing is so popular in Japan why isn’t there a manga about it already!? Of all my reads, only manga which has featured climbing is Hirayasumi. I hope we get Hajime No Ippo level sports manga based on climbing someday 🤞.

Climbing Shoes
I have been trying to buy a pair of climbing shoes for a long time at this point! I had seen a lead on Bengaluru Climbing Group this week, a UK 6.5 Tarantulace. In my mind, this was the exact size I wanted, they were supposed to fit me perfectly! To my surprise, they were BIG, and not just slightly big, they were my normal shoes size. That was a VERY BIG BUMMER. I am back on the hunt for shoes now. If anyone reading this is travelling to Europe/Japan and don’t mind carrying some shoes back, please lemme know 🙏.
Thursday Set
This week first wall and baby wall got reset and there were some really interesting routes on them! I couldn’t continue the streak of me sending everything upto level 5 this week. Heck, I felt like I had regressed a bit too much 😭. Just one of those days :P.
Routes on baby wall were especially difficult. There were two level 3s which I couldn’t flash. I really don’t remember last time I had to even look at a level 3 before just starting to climb it :(. Red level 3 took five attempts to send, and white level 3 took three attempts to send. And this wasn’t even the worst part 🫠. There was a level 4 which most of my friends flashed and it took me 20 attempts to get that 😭. It was so bad that for some reason, I am not even disappointed. I was just happy I could complete it.
Next, I moved onto trying out level 5s. This was the only good part that day, I flashed blue slab set on baby wall. Moving onto first wall, I almost flashed a yellow level 5, but kept falling on its last move. Surprisingly I couldn’t complete it till the end of the session :(. And lastly, there was a pinkish level 5 which is a sideways dyno on two 45 degree steep volumes, first hold and second hold both are jugs, but its still a dyno. I am very bad at them, and I am not sure I want to try that route a lot because of my ankle. Let’s see.
Video
I had talked about flashing a black level 5 on overhang last week, this is its video:
Swimming
Swimming was pretty interesting this week! Even though I missed Sunday and Friday this week, it didn’t feel bad. Sunday was a genuine failure, I forgot to set my alarm. I had woken up and was suspicious I was getting too much sleep, but decided to depend on alarm anyways. Well should have listened to body’s natural clock! ⏰ Friday was because I had to make it early to the Hasgeek conference.
Justifications aside, I experimented with 500 meters of continuous swimming this week and passed with flying colors! When I had started swimming again few months back I didn’t feel strong enough for some reason to continue swimming long distances, I have done 1.2 km continuous swims in the past everyday for years, but this year felt weird. Well, I am happy I am getting back. But there’s another thing, I don’t want to swim all that long together cause that takes up my whole session. Completing 1.2km in 35 minutes is just breaking neck-to-neck with time. I instead want to use this time to relax, see people swim, learn a new skill, do underwater training, anything other than mindless strokes. That’s also the reason I am happy capping my swim up to 900 meters everyday. That’s enough to get me tired, and still leave enough time to do other stuff :).
Food
This week’s food exploration had landed me in Spettacolare. This is supposedly super packed on weekends! We went there on a Thursday evening and it was empty, so we got all the attention of the staff. We ordered three different types of pizzas, a spaghetti, a slushy, a hot chocolate and finally desserts!
Pizza bread was really nice, but honestly pizzas felt to be a bit lacking in flavour. Out of the three, I liked Funghi E Tartufo the most. Red Berry Slushy was decent, nothing fancy. But the hot chocolate and desserts slapped! We had ordered Bombolini and OH BOY, it went so well with hot chocolate, anyone visiting the place anytime soon, 100% try this combination! Just be wary to have someone with you cause its not upto a single person to finish it :P.
Work
Work was business as usual this week, I did a round of feedback to understand everyone’s pain points after two weeks of working with monorepo and then continued working on our iceberg integration. We have a working query with the stack! 🎉. Onto performance next. 🚤
Watch
I have been watching Journal With Witch very very slowly, its not that the show is not interesting, but quite the opposite. It is so relaxing and relatable to some of the life events happening in my personal life that I have re-watched few scenes multiple times to understand their meaning better and better. Few dialogues I really liked:
Treating someone right...Its such a simple, difficult thingLoliness, despair...How hard it must be not to know the words to express those things yet. The harsh truth is that we're never able to. And we live in fear of it forever.
There should have been more, but I started collecting these very late :(. I am glad I started watching this anime. Once again a random anime perfectly timed saves me from doing something stupid in personal life, eternally grateful to this one 🙏.
Tech
Personal project
I didn’t make much progress on nested loop join this week, it took some time to understand the implementation present in the datafusion and remapping it to apply the same in my codebase. I tried out a couple of different approaches to sewing together matched rows from both tables, but at the end I understand why datafusion took the approach it took. Well, I hope to complete the nested loop join soon with that! And after that will come the exciting part of performance hunting in this tight loop 😈.
Conference
I wrote a blog this week about my experience at The Fifth Elephant conference here. And as mentioned in it, I am returning to X (twitter) again. I would being posting systems blogs on my profile as always. But there are some rules I want to follow:
- No mindless scrolling of it
- If you read a tweet which interests you, actually sit and research it in depth
- Blocking it during work hours using LeechBlock
Just an FYI to the reader, I only keep tech related stuff on this account, that’s why the second point :).
