Work

This week hasn’t brought me relief from monorepo hell, instead now there’s now extra work thrown on top of it. Now I am also responsible for migrating regression of our rust engine to platform team’s 2.0 APIs. I do not understand how SREs/devops peeps keep writing actions, terraform and keep doing this work everyday! Huge respect for them. I would be happy to stay away from human invented mess, I am happy fighting mostly laws of physics when doing performance work on database internals.

Sports

Swimming

My friction blister settled down by Monday evening, so I started swimming back again the very next day. Overall it was just three sessions missed, so not bad. I am back to enjoying my time swimming and relaxing.

Also, something unexpected happened this Saturday, I completed swimming 25m underwater! I have been trying to do this for a while at the end of every session. It helps that my swimming pool is an olympic size one. So I do laps most of the session along 50m length and at the end after some relaxing frog and dog style strokes, I try underwater along the breadth.

It was even more surprising to me cause at the start of the dive I got some water in my nose and I thought I would need to come back up half way in the dive. But somehow, my lungs were on fire that day, I wasn’t tired, I wasn’t out of breath till the finish wall. I have a feeling I could have gone longer, maybe 30-35m easily! Should just have done that instead of coming up to celebrate

Climbing

On the climbing front, it hasn’t been going so good. This week I had presumed overhang wall was going to get changed, but they changed slab and semi-slab walls. I was able to flash all the routes till level 4. And another one of a level 5 also was an easy set. Instead of the set routes, I focused on spam wall this time, this is how spam looks like this time around:

Spam climbing wall

It’s basically an overhung wall where anyone can make their own routes. Different circles in the photo above show different ways to start and end, holds and footholds involved and a community vetted grade.

For some reason, I couldn’t gather the courage to do green level 5 on overhang wall, maybe I will try it in the next week! Overall, it was just laggard climbing, but its fine, there are weeks like that. There will be weeks where I feel super strong too :)

Ankle

Another reason I am not pushing much on slab is my ankle. It is starting to feel a lot more wobbly all of a sudden. This is bad cause its been approximately 2 months already, I should have recovered to a good extent! Or maybe I am just being too optimistic. Well regardless I have started wearing a mini ankle binder from nivia, lets see if that makes a difference or I need to take a break again 😭.

Food explore

On Sunday, me, Gunwant and one of his flatmates went to Tandoori Taal for dinner! His flatmate is a Delhi guy, so its hard to convince him that there is a decent North Indian food place in Bengaluru. But after having some delicious food with Lassi, buddy was convinced, this is the best North Indian food he has had in Bengaluru! Mission Success!

Also yesterday i.e. Saturday, evening I organized another edition of Chaat and Chats, again with Gunwant and a colleague of mine. Its been few months since we have done this so it was refreshing to start this again. This time our destination was BDA Banshankari. We did a lot of snacking around different shops, our menu list was:

Thoroughly enjoyed walking around the area on a weekend. It seemed like a super lively place with colleges, gardens, and residential housing around. Spaced out enough to not feel cramped, but close enough to keep the whole place lively :)

Watch

I completed Peaky blinders season five this week. And I have a controversial opinion, I think it is over hyped. It is an amazing show, but the way people have been describing the show to me, it did not live up to those expectations :(

Tech

I was able to make some progress on my personal project of writing join algorithm in Zig. I was doing some benchmarking setup and also was trying to understand how to compile a two file project in Zig. Maybe I am just straight up dumb, but I find it hard to understand how people find this easy. Also of note, this is a no LLM project, so I am back to struggling like the good old days :)

I also started using DuckDuckGo again, and to be honest I do get better results for tech queries on the same! This is in contrast to when I tried it in college. I think DuckDuckGo has improved, but even largely Google has enshittifed more!

Writing

On the writing front, I was able to get Hampi’s second day out on this Saturday! It turned out to be much longer than I had originally intended. Core draft seemed too small, so I decided to start extending it with more details. I did the extending part over three separate sessions on three separate days. This might have led me to over-extend it. But overall, I am happy, it wasn’t too bad :).

Also, in last IndieWebBlr meetup, Abhinav gave me some encouragement about my writing. I think this might have made my week!! So thanks Abhinav for all the praises you shower on people. Also, I do have your feedback in mind, will think about ways to improve upon it!

Reading

Last week, my 9-year-old started using iMovie on the iPad. She doesn’t know anything about editing. She doesn’t even know what editing is.

But we opened iMovie after I told her, “You can use this to cut out the part of the video where you see my hand.” She said, “What do you mean, ‘cut out’?”

So we cut the video up, removed some parts, moved others around. She then figured out how to add sounds and a soundtrack. Then, together (me, her, ChatGPT), we learned how to make the soundtrack play only at certain points in the video and so on.

While we were doing that, I kept thinking that a model or an agent could probably do that. Or maybe in a year. And then you could just say what you want and it would edit the video. Cut here, cut there, make this the first scene, move these around, and so on.

Then it hit me: she wouldn’t know what to say, would she?

She doesn’t know anything about editing. She’s seen movies before, sure. That means she’s seen J cuts, L cuts, jump cuts, other types of transitions, title screens, and end credits; but she doesn’t _know_ what those things are, does she? So how could she ask for them? By pointing at something else? “Make this look like that”? Would that work? Would that lead to the same results?

And that, of course, made me think about software engineering. I hope it does the same for you.
