I returned from Hampi early Monday morning and was in office the next hour. So much for a soul healing trip :P. JK, I could have decided to stay home, but was too restless to get back to work. Well, work didn’t end up well, read on.
Work
This has been a super duper focused work week, I am doing something extremely boring: setting up monorepo for everything related to database engine team. All the work of submodules are in correct place, all paths are pointing to the shared locations, why are the github actions failing on caching the JARs, etc. It’s super grunt work and I did the same whole week. You would expect it to be complete by now with help of LLMs. BUT NO! I think it will take another 2-3 days to get everything in place, after which I will have to work with every team to handhold them on the new setup. How did I land up here? Guess caring about your personal dev setup gets you away from core work to these side quests 😅
I also ended up travelling to office four days a week, which is usually 2-3 depending on the week. It has to be at least two cause I climb in evening after work and travel to the gym directly from the office. Third day is optional office trip, and fourth day this time was for meeting a friend who didn’t get a chance to come to office earlier in the week.
Writing
Another thing I did a lot this week is writing. I WROTE SO MUCH. I wrote logs of all days in Hampi, I wrote a poem and this weeknote. For now I was able to publish only day 1 and poem. I am kinda proud of the volume of writing and editing I have done this week, despite the busy schedule. Hopefully I can keep it up forever (I never want to stop writing).
Tech
This week was easy on tech side. I wasn’t able to make much progress on personal projects i.e. handrolling joins. Instead I spent most of my time working on office stuff or working on my poems and Hampi trip logs.
Sports
I was able to restart swimming after Hampi and went there all 6 days before I had to stop due to a friction blister on my second finger of right foot. Its a bad time to be my right foot right now 🫠. First 2 month down sprain and now this.
While cardio is proper, I did not feel as strong on the climbing side. There’s a new project I have been trying, it’s a level 5 green route on overhang. And I just can’t execute the crux move. It’s a high left foot jam with two hand pinch hang. I am going to try hard on it next week too! I will try as many times as possible and SEND IT, such a beautiful climb 🤌.
Except for that I flashed a level 5 black in cave, that was an instant confidence enhancer. Enjoy video for the same:
Interesting encounter
On Saturday, while sipping coffee in a random Darshini, I saw a guy reading manga. I gathered a LOT OF COURAGE and walked up to talk to him. He was reading One Piece, and we talked about so many random things. It felt like talking to a long time friend rather than a stranger. I think it hit off so good because we both had massive respect for Hajime No Ippo. I grew a deep respect for the guy because he started Kick Boxing after reading the manga and has been doing it for 5 years!! Not a soda bottle motivation instance. I think this is a first, in terms of me meeting a person who deeply understood meaning and impact of this exact panel and words.

Food
I really loved Dose, Paddu and Coffee in Hampi, they are just straight up different from Bengaluru’s usual, its like comparing industrial machine outputs to handicrafts.
Also, if you ever visit Hampi, my friends asked to include Egg Dosa in this entry, its supposedly super delicious. I would have expected a sunny side up on Dose, but instead it turned out to be some amalgation of dose and omlette.

“Do fewer things. Do them better. Know why you're doing them.”- Cal Newport- My father has been instilling in us since childhood: “Whatever you do, do it properly” (sounds better in Marwadi)
“If you can't write clearly, you probably don't think nearly as well as you think.”- Kurt Vonnegut- I believe this to my heart and I can definitely see my writing being all over the place, hopefully practicing it also makes me better at thinking about things.
